For many centuries there was a story about a greedy blacksmith and drunkard Jack who deceived the devil three times and bargained for himself many years of easy life, as well as a promise not to claim his soul after death.

When the drunkard died, his soul did not enter the heaven either. Jack was forced to wander the earth in an anticipation of the Judgment Day, lighting his way with a piece of coal, which he put in an empty pumpkin head.
